Mesothelioma treatment options are at the top of your priority list when you or someone you love is faced with this disease. You want to know if there is a mesothelioma lung cancer treatment that will help stop or slow the spread of the cancer. And the good news is that there are a few options that have shown promise in treating this disease, however, the cure rate of success is not high.
When you are looking at mesothelioma treatment options, most of these will simply slow the spread of the cancer, as there is no definitive cure for advanced cases in which the patient was exposed to high levels of asbestos.
Here are some of the most common treatment options:
Surgery
If the affected lining area of the mesothelioma case is small and operable, the first thing an oncologist may recommend is surgery. Taking out the cancerous part of the body is often a very successful treatment option in stopping the spread of the cancer in milder cases. However, it can also be a risky procedure as the surgeon needs to be sure they removed all of the affected area lest they leave a part in the body that can regenerate.

Radiation
Another common choice in mesothelioma treatment options is radiation. In this procedure, the patient will have a targeted beam of radiation directed at the affected part of the body in order to kill the cancerous cells. Often this is used in addition to surgery and chemotherapy. Many patients find radiation therapy helpful in slowing the growth of tumors that can cause discomfort. And while this treatment option isn't a cure for
mesothelioma, any decrease in pain is a blessing to the patient.
Chemotherapy
There are a number of different reasons why chemotherapy would be used over other treatment options. If the mesothelioma cancer has spread to many parts of the body, this drug therapy will be able to help a wider area. Some common chemotherapy drugs include Pemetrexed in combination with cisplatin and
Alimta. The only concern with these drug therapies is that healthy cells are also killed when the cancerous cells are killed by the chemicals in the drugs.
